What do Australians really know about South Korea? The Republic of Korea is our third largest trading partner as well as a good friend in the region. Tens of thousands of students visit Australia every year to study. Many have settled here and now call Australia home.

Since I returned back from Korea on my last trip, it has been intriguing to read the newspapers (what used to be broadsheet since I left have shrunk in size…) to hear what people are saying about South Korea.

So, what are people writing about South Korea?

Well, as it turns out, they are writing more about North Korea and the Korean Peninsula as a place of strife than they are about South Korea itself.

With one exception: Psy gets a prominent look in with his now-famous Gangnam Style ‘horse dance’ which seems to attract attention mostly because it has attracted attention.

I guess that is just the nature of news. Calamities and curiousities…
